Cineon HD Log for broadcast grades |

Please excuse my ignorance but I am a little confused with the Cineon Format specs.
I am investigating a DI style workflow for a broadcast series program.
I completely see the benefits of grading in log for 'film out' productions and want to
have the same latitude and control while grading scanned data for broadcast only work.
With this workflow in mind I am trying to work out the difference between a Cineon LOG scan
and a Flat 'one light' linear telecine xfer where all the detail of the negative is transferred to disk.
ie: nothing is crushed or clipped in the xfer.
My confusion comes in the understanding of the actual scanned frame in Cineon format.
Is it ...
A: a linear scan that is expecting to see a logarithmic gamma curve LUT so that one can view it in its expected final form - on film.
or
B: Is it actually a special type of scan where the image Data is packed higher across the white and black areas of the picture.
or have I got the concept completely wrong.
Any input would be hugely apreciated.

If you are only going to Broadcast the project then you should stick with standard Telecine. This is linear and the Cineon files would only have to be converted back to a linear format for you to give to your client. A Spirit scan would be fine for this type of situation. You could have the Spirit output 10bit dpx lin files if you like.
